Shut up and Bleed…

An analysis of the Spirit trailer:

That’s really all I have to say, and I’m not saying it in a good way. I was pretty excited when I heard that Frank Miller was helming a comic book adaption of The Spirit. I’ve never read that comic but I do like Miller’s novels so I was on board.

Then the first trailer came out. “My city screams…” It was hook and catch. I was pretty fuckin’ stoked to see this movie, especially from the visuals it really reminded me of Sin City, which I was a big fan of. It had that modern noir feel to it which I thought was pretty cool.

Then this is released. Let’s just say, that hook that Miller had so eloquently jabbed through my lip has slipped out. It looks terrrible. The first minute or so I was fine with it, it played on his relationships with women, and kept that noir feel to it. Then Mr. Samuel muthafuckin Jackson steps into the picture. My anticipation disappeared.

The sort of Pop-anime style that Miller employs doesn’t feel like it belongs in this story, or what I’ve heard about it. It feels forced and kind of lame. Another thing, something about Sam Jackson in a Nazi uniform just doesn’t do it for me.

On another note Gabriel Macht, the actor cast as the Spirit, looks rather fitting for the role, but not enough to get me excited again.

Perhaps I’m being to cynical, perhaps this movie is just so batshit nutty that it will work. I’m rooting for it, but all the signs tell me I’m rooting for the underdog.
